Types of QR Codes Explained — URL, vCard, WiFi, UPI, and More
Not All QR Codes Are the Same
Most people think of a QR code as "that square thing that opens a website." But QR codes can encode many different types of data, and the type you choose determines what happens when someone scans it.
Understanding the options helps you pick the right format for your specific use case — and avoid creating a QR code that does less than it could.
Static vs Dynamic QR Codes
Before diving into types, there is a fundamental distinction:
Static QR codes encode data directly into the pattern. The information cannot be changed after the code is generated. If you need to update the destination, you must create a new QR code.
Dynamic QR codes encode a short redirect URL that points to your actual destination. You can change where it redirects without regenerating the code. This is ideal for printed materials where reprinting is costly.
| Feature | Static | Dynamic | |---------|--------|---------| | Editable after creation | No | Yes | | Scan tracking | No | Usually yes | | Best for | Permanent links, WiFi, vCards | Marketing campaigns, menus, events | | Complexity | Simpler pattern | Slightly denser |
URL QR Codes
The most common type. Encodes a web address. When scanned, the phone's browser opens the URL directly.
Best for: Landing pages, product pages, portfolios, online stores, social media profiles.
Tip: Keep the URL short. Long URLs create denser QR codes that are harder to scan at small sizes.
vCard QR Codes
Encodes a digital business card with structured contact fields — name, phone, email, company, job title, website, and address. Scanning the code prompts the phone to save a new contact.
Best for: Business cards, email signatures, conference badges, and networking events.
Tip: Include your LinkedIn URL in the website field for a more complete professional profile.
WiFi QR Codes
Encodes your network name (SSID), password, and encryption type. Scanning it connects the phone to the WiFi network automatically — no manual password entry.
Best for: Offices, cafes, hotels, co-working spaces, Airbnb properties, and retail stores.
Tip: Generate a WiFi QR code and print it near the entrance or at the front desk. It saves your staff from repeating the password dozens of times a day.
Email QR Codes
Encodes an email address and optionally a subject line and body text. Scanning the code opens the user's email app with the fields pre-filled.
Best for: Customer support, feedback collection, event RSVPs, and contact forms.
SMS QR Codes
Similar to email, but opens the phone's messaging app with a pre-filled number and message.
Best for: Opt-in campaigns, quick feedback ("Text YES to confirm"), and customer service shortcuts.
UPI Payment QR Codes
Widely used in India, UPI QR codes encode a payment address (VPA) and optionally an amount and merchant name. Scanning opens the user's payment app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) with the payment pre-filled.
Best for: Shopkeepers, freelancers, event ticket payments, and donation drives.
Plain Text QR Codes
Encodes raw text — no URL, no structured data, just a string of characters. The phone displays the text when scanned.
Best for: Serial numbers, coupon codes, short messages, instructions, and Easter eggs.
How to Choose the Right Type
Ask yourself:
- What should happen when someone scans this? Open a webpage? Save a contact? Connect to WiFi? Pay you?
- Will the information change? If yes, consider a dynamic QR code with a redirect URL.
- Where will the QR code appear? Print materials benefit from static codes (no dependency on a redirect service). Digital campaigns benefit from dynamic codes (trackable and editable).
